Instructions Essay question You will write an analytical essay that addresses the following: Problem A UK survey identified that ‘three-quarters of children aged between 10 and 12 have social media accounts despite being below the age limit’ (Jamieson 2016). Subsequent problems then stem from early use of social media from emotional abuse through to privacy concerns. • Generation Alpha (born 2010 +) are entering this age boundary. • Change is needed to prevent early adoption of social media. Prior research is necessary before creating a prevention program or campaign and, as such, you are asked to critically evaluate the implications when selecting communication strategies and tactics and, monitoring and evaluation for a specific target public. As the problem is situated among children, there are several ethical implications that would guide decisions. Your essay will be informed by theory. In addition, your discussion should outline the ethical implications. Below are a set of questions that will help you develop your essay. For convenience, they are placed under four key areas for consideration. 1. Target public • You need to learn more about your target public and the best way to elicit change. Determine if you should target the children, their parents/guardians or another identified target public. Why have you chosen this target public? 2. Communication • How should the target public be told? • What forms of communication are they most likely to use (media, technology and platforms)? 3. Strategy and tactics Based on successful past programs and campaigns, • Provide an example of the type of organisation best positioned to deliver this program/campaign and explain why. You can be specific and name a potential organisation or, discuss the sector that should run the program, i.e government, not-for-profit or corporate sector, or discuss the merits of a coordinated approach. • Who do your target public perceive as having source credibility and why? • What tactics are most likely to resonate with your audience? 4. Monitoring and evaluation • What is the best way of monitoring and measuring successful articulation/understanding of the message? Why do you think this is the best form of measurement? Your analysis needs to consider and outline the ethical implications all key areas. Your decisions should be supported and justified by a combination of academic literature and evidence from other information sources. Include a minimum of 7 academic references. Introduction:
Social media is an interactive social media technology that allows people on social media to socialize and communicate with each other. Social media includes various website and applications that help people
to connect faster and in an easier way. With the daily evolving technology social media has become a part of everyone’s life. Nowadays everyone has easy access to internet and everyone have a smartphone or tablet or computer with them which is making everyone to use social media. Social media has become a part of everyday life. We can get lot of information, news, entertainment, communication with people and many more fun stuff from social media. The main(O'Keeffe,2011) disadvantage of social media is that it is easily accessible to children under the age 10 years and 12 years. This is not as good as it looks. The children engaging with social media have far more effects than they have any uses with using social media. Usage of social media by children causes mental illness, depression, stress etc. There are many case studies and researches done by(Chassiakos,2016) professionals to prove how social media is effecting children. So by at least looking at all the case studies and research done on children things have to be changed.
Target Audience:
Children are innocent, they don’t know what they are doing. They just follow what is attracting them in that specific age. As the age 10 to 12 is the age where most of the children grow and brain development happen they should be restricted from over usage of social media. Parents/guardians should be responsible and take in charge of seeing whether children are using social media to an extent. It is also important for parents to keep an eye on their children to keep them safe from social media hazards. During(Strasburger,2010) the initial stages of using social media like Facebook, snapchat, Instagram etc., most of the children like to share images and communicate with other people. If the result of such doings is not as expected by the children, then they will go into depression and there will be some mental changes in children. Parents have to be cautious about their children in the early stages and try to speak with them and solve the issues.
Many children are sharing personal information on social media. Parents have to check regularly the phones or tablets used by children so as to know what content is viewed by children. Also due to the increased technology there are many ways in which parents can impose controls on their children. As per the surveys of UK Safer Internet center socializing is important in the present world scenario, but the survey has found that many children between the age 10 years to 12 years are facing Internet Hate. This Internet hate seriously damages the mental growth of children and let them go off into deep depression. These things have to be taken care by parents. They have to have various parental controls and take care of their children in going in the wrong way or watching something bad in social media. Majority(Barnett,2013) of the children under 12 years or 13 Years are creating Facebook, Instagram and other social media websites with wrong age and following bad stiff which is bad for children of that age. Since parents are the only one that take real care of their children and have true love towards them, it is the parents responsibility to teach ways to their children.
Internet has become a world of knowledge. Many things can be learned from it. So parents have to spend time for their children and teach their children the limits of using social media at this early age. Also it is necessary for parents/Guardians to not buy personal gadgets to their children in this early age. This might make children crave to use social media and once they are completely addicted to social media it is tough to bring them out as their age is very small. Parents are the only one who can teach their children about social media in a sensible way. Parents are the only one to which children listen to. This is because of the bond that children maintain with parents that make the children listen to their parents. Children are always curious of what their parents do so parents/Guardians should use social media by keeping limits because it is the parents that children follow and mend their way. All that parents have to do is just keep track of what their children are doing.
Communication:
How the Target Public should be told:
There are many ways in which a child can be affected through social media. Being the parent of a child, a parent/Guardian must learn ways to control their children and refrain their children from being effected by social media. Like the(Slaby,1995) technology improvement has become a boon to social media applications and websites it has also been a boon to various parental Controls over social media to oppose children from using social media. There are various countries around the world where children of under age are using social media. Surveys has to be conducted just like the way UK has conducted to know how many children are under the dark eye of inappropriate usage of social media. These surveys have to be shown to parents and various workshops and small meetings have to be conducted for parents to know about the results of such surveys. This might create some awareness among the parents of how their children are getting spoiled by using the social media.
It has to be told to the parents/guardians of ways of explaining to their children to not use social media. It first depends on parents to deal with such scenarios. It lies with the parents to see that children spend less time in social media. First parents who have social media accounts in Facebook,...
