ange: A Primer on Gentrification and Policy Choices. Washington, DC: Brookings Institution Center on Urban and Metropolitan Policy, Gentrification Report July 2002.
Gentrification has caused a change in the neighborhood differentiating between higher income groups of the city from the lower income. With the growing inequality in economic prosperity, the poor have concentrated in a disproportionate distribution in different parts of the urban areas. It can also be understood that the gentrification is a byproduct of lack of vacant space and absence of much-unoccupied building. The intensity of gentrification varies from one city to the other depending on the tight housing markets as well as depending upon the neighborhoods. There is a possibility of improving the situation if specific strategies can be developed with the help of the residents of the neighborhood, developers, interest groups and officials. They are the ones who will assist in addressing adverse situations due to gentrification. Further, it is essential to develop a market-driven process that will increase the possibility of building a stronger economy under diverse communities.
