Summary of the Movie
Field of Dreams is a sports, fantasy and drama film which was released in the year 1989. The story revolves around a farmer who often hears unknown voice from his cornfield saying “If you built it, he will come”. The farmer could not see anyone in the field but could only listen to the voice. He then interprets these voices through a vision granted to him as commands to build a baseball diamond on his farm. Once the baseball field was build on the farm the ghost of shoeless Joe Jackson along with the seven other players of Chicago White who were banned from the game started to appear. Ray, the owner of the farm who heard such bizarre voices took the help of a reclusive author to interpret the meaning of the messages he heard and the purpose his field was to serve. Messages in Ray’s dreams have seemed to guide him throughout the movie.
    Ray, who is the hero of the film along with Annie, his wife tries to listen to his instincts related to the game of baseball. Annie is the biggest support of Ray in the movie and with her support Ray was able to create a baseball diamond onto a portion of his cornfield. The story of the film has also managed to showcase baseball as a game of the innocent times rather an industry to earn money. The movie also depicts the love of Ray’s father towards baseball which consequently leads Ray relate with the sport. Moreover, baseball is hegemony for Ray and his father, a cultural belief rather than just a game. The movie is not only revolving around a sport but is a mix of several themes. The ideology and hegemony in the film regarding the love for baseball and considering it as a culture helped to relate the audience and through this the message of the film was clear to public. The film is the biggest sport film of its time with a lot of emotions and drama being involved.
