The student is required to deliver a short presentation on one of the topic mentioned below. Presentation time is 10minutes. The student should submit a detailed written paper on their topic with full research references (maximum 1000 words). The paper must include an introduction, main body and conclusion. It must be formatted and presented in an academic manner. The answer sheet and your presentation are evaluated and the student will be assessed by the assessor based on the marking guide attached with the topic question.
Topic 1:Primary Health Care is geared towards the community, for the community and by the community, with the emphasis being on the preventative rather than the curative end of the health care continuum. It is based on the following principle (and others):
• Consumer / community participation and responsiveness
• Communities demand to participate more in health.
• Options are sought in relation to health promotion, not just responses to existing problems.
• Community health services must be appropriate for the community needs.
In your presentation you are required to discuss the above in relation to a community programme currently or recently running in your area.
Who was the programme geared towards?
How were the participants captured for the programme?
How are the organizers assessing the effectiveness of the programme?
What is the cost of the programme?
Topic 2:Each State Government has a Health Promotion Strategic Framework.
Discuss one (1) Health Promotion Strategy proposed by your State. In this presentation demonstrate how and why the strategy is important.
What methods does the paper propose for the implementation of the strategy?
Identify the co-morbidities which could be eliminated if such strategies were implemented.
Topic 3:The cost of inaction on the Social Determinates of Health will lead to more inequality in population health and a greater burden of health in specific areas of the community.
Discuss one (1) aspect of Social Determinates of Health. The aspect is of your choosing – but confirm it with your teacher before progressing.
In this presentation identify the particular Social Determinate you are addressing and how inaction in this area is impinging on health. How would the proposed interventions rectify this situation?
Topic 4:Health inequalities are unfair and avoidable differences in health status between different population groups. What groups in particular are impacted by these inequalities?
VicHealth, NSW and WA Government organisations invests in research to improve understanding and develop programs to reduce health inequalities. Their work addresses a range of determinants and risk factors.
What are these areas being addressed by these groups and how are these programmes being implemented?
What is the effectiveness of the programmes?
Why is Health Inequality seen as a public health and wellbeing priority?
What strategies could be implemented in your community to reduce this inequality? How do you believe it could be carried out?
