The sign-magnitude notation for a negative number is represented by the equation shown below, where the sign bit is the radix minus 1. In sign-magnitude notation, the positive version differs from the negative version only in the sign digit position. The magnitude portion an–2an–3 … a1a0 is identical for both positive and negative numbers of the same absolute value.
