Social System and Innovation in India
Introduction:
An innovation is a new idea, practice, or product that introduced to individuals or other
recipients (Rogers, 2003). It occurs when an individual or an entity attempts to research and
answer the many questions that come out of the ordinary or that have not been produced before.
Innovation includes the development of a new idea or new technique, or the development of
theory or invention or a new way to produce a new product. Some of the basic functions of the
innovation are to overcome the past, address current challenges, and create value for the future.
However, in many cases, people tend to resist new ideas or changes, and they like to continue
with what they have and prefer not to be the first one to take the risk of trying a new thing.
Therefore, many innovations are rejected or delayed in diffusion before they are widely adopted.
Problem Statement:
Social innovation is gaining importance across the globe. In this research paper we will
focus on analyzing the acceptance of social innovation and system in India
Research Aims and Objectives
To analyze the need of social innovation in India and how different social innovations in
India are taking place.
Literature Review
Social innovations have been primarily investigated through the concept of social
entrepreneurship. This is mainly because social innovations are often intrinsically linked with the
entrepreneurial re-combinatory activities of individuals who are motivated to affect social
changes and it is difficult to separate the individual from the process. Routinized innovation
activities that are quite common in innovation within commercial enterprises (Baumol 1992;
Schumpeter 1947, 1951) are infrequent in the context of social innovations. For this reason, the
literature on social entrepreneurship forms the basis of identification of distinctive characteristics
of social innovation.
Each of the social innovations involves a particular segment of society (usually a
marginalized group), and all or part of the benefits of the innovation accrue to that same segment
of the society (Tan, Williams and Tan 2005). For instance, some social innovations involve
creating economic security for the poor by developing new services.
The scope of social innovations is quite wide from economic development to health and
education services for marginalized sections. This is reflective of the fact that in the social sector,
social needs and hence social entrepreneurial opportunities are numerous.
Several innovations are introduced to different social networks and produce different
results. Some innovation spread and was adopted earlier in one form of social system than
another and the same innovation delayed or failed to diffuse in another social system. According
to Rogers (2003), "diffusion is the process by which an innovation is communicated through
certain channels over time among members of a social system. It is a special type of
communication, in that the messages are concerned with new ideas." (p. 5). It also refers to the
planned and the spontaneous spread of new innovation. Therefore, diffusion of innovations is “a
theory of how, why, and at what rate new ideas and technology spread through cultures.”
(Folorunso, Vincent, Adekoya, & Ogunde, 2010, p.361).
Every society has it is own system and structure that makes it unique. A society consists
of members who carry their own beliefs and values, traditions, perceptions, history, and culture.
They interact with each other and share a common language and location. Rogers (2003),
defines a social system as “a set of interrelated units that are engaged in joint problem solving to
accomplish a common goal. The...
