Introduction
    Beowulf is an epic poem written by an anonymous Anglo-Saxon writer and is one of the well-known literary pieces of the Old English Literature. Beowulf is an epic hero in the poem who is considered the epitome of virtues and comes to the rescue of King of Danes from a monster named Grendel (Merchant). . Later Beowulf kills Grendel`s mother who tried to take revenge of the death of her son. Beowulf after becoming the king of Geats goes on to defeat a dragon after 50 years. Beowulf dies fighting the dragon. The heroes in epic poem portray varied characteristics like charisma, etc. that cannot be aligned with the present day heroes (Forni). The morals in the medieval society are different with the modern day morals as well.
Thesis statement
The perception of heroes, good, evil and monsters as have changed over time, in a comparative context of medieval times, as depicted in Beowulf and in modern society.
Comparison of Characteristics of Hero in Beowulf to that of the Heroes in the Modern World
    In the Anglo Saxon society, the heroes, who were warriors, displayed the primary characteristics of boldness, valor and fortitude (Symons). It was viewed as that the heroes would even surrender battling for what is right. The heroes would even give up their lives but not surrender to the enemies in the battlefield. As Beowulf passed on after a battle with a dragon and showed his brave characteristics, Wiglaf said about Beowulf that, “vowed you would never let your name and fame / be dimmed while you lived’ (Chickering). In contrast to these characteristics of a hero in the medieval times, the heroes of the contemporary society did not display valiant characteristics (Ruhland). The children in the modern society perceive heroes to be as fictitious characters but as they grow up to become adults, their perception about heroes changes.
