The readings for Week 3 discuss perception and intelligence. Education in our individualistic western culture places great value and emphasis on verbal (language) and mathematical intelligence. This has aided tremendous advances in science and technology! However, in many collectivist cultures survival often depends on other kinds of nonverbal intelligence. Knowing what and when to plant and harvest, navigating across open seas without modern radar, how to hunt animals, and how to survive in extreme climates like the Arctic or the desert are all examples of human behavior that enabled our ancestors and many people to day to survive in collectivist cultures. A modern psychologist from our individualistic culture without special training dropped into some environments might not be able to survive! For this weekly discussion I ask you to select a collectivist culture today that requires some special knowledge or type of intelligence not taught in schools, but essential for survival in that collectivist culture. Be specific. Be sure to provide citations to support your comments and respond to at least two other students.
