3 a -find the mode of the scores: I-5 6 6 7 7 7 8 9 ii-2 3 4 5 7 9 iii-23 24 25 26 35 35 35 B-is the mode a
satisfactory me
asure of central tendency for the data in I,ii and iii above? C-by finding the median and
mode, discuss the relative merits of these measures for each of the above distributions.
Solutions:
3. a) the mode is the highest frequency of the data point.
1) 5 6 6 7 7 7 8 9 2) 2 3 4 5 7 9 3) 23 24 25 26 35 35 35
Mode = 7 Mode = 0 Mode = 35
Mode is satisfactory measure for (1) and (3) but not for (2). This is because mode is that value which
occur maximum number of times in data set. In case of (2), there is no such value and hence mode is
zero.
Median = 7 Median = 4.5 Median = 26
Median is the middle most value in the data set when arranged in descending/ascending order.
Relative Merits
1) By calculating median, we find the middle number of a set of data. So in this case outliers have
little or no effect across all the distributions.
2) Median is very useful measure when we are comparing different data sets...
