The purpose of this project is to attenda concert of Western Art music (classical music)and write a review of the performance. By doing so, you will put your listening skills in to practice and learn more about how live concerts work.
It is your job to describe the composer, period, genre, and style of music you encountered at your recent concert experience, based on library/internet research. To do each assignment, you will need to complete the following:
- Attend a concert featuring music from the Medieval Era up to the 21st century (please keep the program if there is one); Jazz music is also acceptable.
- Indicate the name of the group, conductor (if any) and composer for each piece performed (you do not need to list each group more than once).
- Indicate the instruments used in each concert.
- Indicate the historical period of each composition.
- In your own words, discuss the music you hear, using the musical concepts we are learning in class and applying them to describe what you have heard. As you write your review, you should also consider describing the following:
- where the event took place.
- what the performing environment was like.
- what you thought of the conductor.
- what the audience was like.
- how the musical program was organized.
- what was the most surprising element of what you saw/heard
- what impressed you the most.
Your review should be at leastone-page(250 words), double-spaced with 1” margins, in Times New Roman or Calibri 12 pt. font. If you follow the guidelines of the assignment, you will easily write more than 250 words.

Below are some common grammar and punctuation issues to observe for this paper:
- Do not use contractions (can't, won't)
- Do avoid misspellings and typos/sloppiness.
- Do be careful with apostrophes used with possessives. (conductor’s face)
- Use Italics for titles (ex. Mozart’sRequiem)
- Do not add apostrophes unnecessarily or in the wrong place. (it’s vs. its)
- Do not use comma splices (The concert was great, I loved it.)
- Do not repeat words whenever possible within a paragraph or constantly throughout your paper.
- Do not use boring words “nice,” “really,” “very,” or “great.”
- In many instances, punctuation goes inside quotation marks; learn the rules governing this usage.

- Do not use "etc." in formal writing.
- Do not ever use an ampersand (&) in formal writing.
- Do not start a sentence with "also."
- Do not capitalize unnecessarily (Violins, Opera)
- Do not use sexist language (if a listener attends, here is what he should listen for).
- Do spell out numbersnineand under. Use numerals for numbers10and larger except when the number starts a sentence, in which case, spell out.
- Do spell out the word "percent;" do not use the % sign.
- Do spell out "United States" when used as a noun. It is OK to use "U.S." as an adjective.

During the regular academic year, Glendale Community College is fortunate to have a number of interesting concerts scheduled throughout the semester. Some concerts are free, while some are also cheap. In selecting your concert, you may find it helpful to consult the following websites for potential programs off campus.
Not all concerts on these websites contain vocal classical/Western art music. You are responsible for ensuring that any concert you attend will feature the appropriate repertoire. See me before the concert if you have any questions about the suitability of a particular performance.
You will submit theConcert Attendance Reviewby clicking on this link here (the assignment will be posted in a later module, so you can also find it there.)
