Please consider the scenario below: Kent is a town of 30,000 people located in rural South Australia. Like many towns in the area, Kent has been heavily affected in recent years by prolonged drought, which appears to be a long-term situation due to climate change. This has led to significant water shortages which are now at a critical level. The town’s council is exploring a number of options, but the one generating the most discussion is a proposal to use recycled treated sewage for the town’s reticulated drinking water supply. The town’s mayor has made contact with the state health department requesting assistance to handle this controversial issue. The state health minister has requested advice from the health department on the issue of recycling treated sewage as potable water. You have been given the task of conducting a rapid literature review on the topic, which discusses the potential environmental health risks and benefits associated with recycled wastewater. The review will later be used to inform a ministerial briefing, so you should cover all aspects that might be relevant to providing advice to the Minister on this issue. For example, you might consider whether there are any management strategies that could reduce the risks you have identified, consider public perceptions about and potential community impact from recycled waste water and what are the issues that are likely to be of concern to community members? 2. Structure of your assignment: Your literature review* should consist of: • Introduction: Background to the issue or state of the problem, describe the aim of the literature review (i.e. what will be discussed), scope of the discussion. • Body: Critical review of the published literature. This section should provide a summary, classification, comparison and evaluation of the literature reviewed/assessed. Please consider potential strengths and weaknesses of the evidence provided. • Conclusion: Conclude the important findings of the literature. This section should include the main agreements, disagreements, any gaps or areas for future research and your overall perspective on the recycling issue. For example, if you were in a position to directly affect decisions on controlling the issue in question, what would you do? What research remains to be done?
