Introduction
Crime prevention refers to recognition, anticipation and appraisal of a crime risk along with the inclusion of mitigation efforts and actions facilitating eradication or reduction in prevalence of crime. It would be essential to consider that approaches to crime prevention have emerged and evolved with the course of time.
Different solutions, policies and practices demonstrate approaches for crime preventions, which are executed by community, courts, law enforcements and family. This paper will discuss some of the common crime prevention approaches such as situational crime prevention, social development, and community crime prevention, crime prevention through environmental design, policing and reduction of recidivism.
Dominant Approaches to Crime Prevention Currently Used by Law Enforcement, Courts, Corrections, Family, or Community
Situational crime prevention approach focusses towards opportunities, which could be more immediate for offenders. In other words, this approach works towards reduction of opportunities for criminals by altering or changing the surroundings through neighbors, polices and other agencies. Freilich and Newman (2017) mentioned that situational crime prevention approach considers four elements, which must be present for a crime to occur that is, a target, an opportunity, a law to be broken and the criminal or offender.
Therefore, inculcating changes would affect the question ‘how crime happens?’ instead of ‘why crime happens?’ such as, through installation of video cameras so that the offenders feel the threat of being videotaped; thus, preventing them from committing the crime. Further, it would be essential to consider the fact that, better understanding of criminal activity and the causes behind it can also help to prevent crime. Durrant (2018) mentioned that here exist certain risk factors, which facilitate crime such as, poverty, drug addiction, abusive treatment, weak self-esteem, lack of resources, lack of education and no parent skill.
