WCPS is in educational sector since last 70 years but was facing issues in setting up baccalaureate program from 2018 (Oke, n.d). Amid pandemic due to economic conditions they were forced to shutdown few campuses as well. This dented the market image as the decision left many parents and teaching staff in troubled situation (Uhl-Bien, Piccolo, Schermerhorn & Bachrach, 2021). The assignment will reflect the management approaches and West Chester Private School (WCPS) will be discussed in the context of open systems dealing with external environment, organizational culture representing internal environment, the decision to close and the closure process, the impact of technology and innovation on stakeholders and the possible way adopted by the WCPS analyzing the situation, the plans for future direction of WCPS, along with the four functions of management.
External Environment and Open Systems
The way West Chester handled the external environment and connected with the open system was not effective enough. The closure of two Phoenix campuses was an abrupt decision and the lack of improper communication with the parents by the school officials create stressed and anxious situation. Parents were angry because there option to enroll their child in another school was also closed. There is a possibility that the finances were the reason, in that case too parents gave the school an option to raise the tuition money but instead management of the school decided to shut the Phoenix campuses. The reason communicated was poor student enrolment but management ensured that the quality of educational programs will remain in tact and will be keep going on as per decided schedule. The parents trusted the authorities and accepted the information as a reliable one but they were mistaken. The school did not understand its responsibility and denied to convey the root cause of the problem. It can be said that the communication strategy adopted by the school leadership was not impressive. It created a barrier between parents and school management. Similarly the administration was also not able to earn the cooperation from parents for conducting school activities.
Internal Environment and Organizational Culture
Climate: Organizational climate is looked upon as the perception of employee about the working conditions prevailing at the place. For teachers it was considered as the supportive, result oriented and desirable to place to work with.
Culture: Organizational culture refers to the practices, values and expectations exists in the system which directs the behavior and actions of the team. WCPS had strong culture which ensured that children grew in safe and cared environment.
Context: In context of its stakeholders the organizational culture and climate were not supportive enough. The management did not pay heed to the concerns of the parents and did not bother about their worries when the school will be closed in mid way (Dua et.al, 2020). It disturbed the trust and kept parents in fear throughout till their child was studying in school witnessing the fate of other Phoenix campuses. Before the closure the work environment lost the productivity factor. While researching it was found that one of the Principal in North Phoenix campus received the news few days before the classes started in December 2019 that the school will be closed after the semester.
