The purpose of this analysis is to design and optimize the flash separation system of simple process flow
sheets of hydrocarbon process. This process also explains energy requirement of separation systems. We
have a feed stream containing 15% ethane, 20% propane, 60% i-butane and 5% n-butane at 50°F and
atmospheric pressure, and a flow rate of 100 lbmole/hr. This stream is to be compressed to 50 psia, and
then cooled to 32°F. The resulting vapor and liquid are to be separated as the two product streams in
flash separator. Answer the following questions.
1. Clearly draw the process flowsheet for above process?
2. Draw the neat simulation flow sheet manually (Similar to ASPEN HYSYS) and specify the units
and streams involved?
3. Write the difference between the process flowsheet and simulation flowsheet with help of part 1)
and part 2 of the questions). Suggest the suitable property package for the above components?
4. Justify the selection of property package?
5. Write the steps involved under property environment?
6. Write the steps involved under simulation environment?
7. Whether energy stream is required in compressor and cooler unit? What will happen if energy
streams are not connected to the cooler and compressor unit? Justify your answer.
8. Whether heat duty or Temperature difference or both required converging the cooler unit in
Aspen Hysys ?
9. Write the state of Top and Bottom streams obtained from flash separator unit?
10. Whether the entire process operated under isobaric condition? Justify.
11. If the process stream is cooled in cooler, write the sign convention of heat flow used in cooler?
