The primary function of the re/spir/atory system is the in/spir/ation of life-sustaining oxygen into the lungs and bloodstream and the ex/pir/ation of the gaseous waste carbon dioxide. Air is moistened, warmed, and filtered by the nasal and sinus passages and moves down the pharynx, into the trachea, to the bronchi, and then into the bronchioles and alveoli.
