The Parent–Child Areas of Change Questionnaire (PC-ACQ) (Jacob & Seilhamer, 1985) is selected to measure the amount of change in the adolescent perceived as necessary by the mother. It’s a 34-item self-report scale with a potential range of values from -102 to +102, and higher scores indicate that more change is seen as necessary. Each scale is completed weekly. After a 3-week baseline, a 7-week intervention designed to increase family social support and decrease the mother’s feelings of being burdened is implemented, and this is followed by a 7-week intervention designed to reduce the amount of change in the adolescent perceived as necessary by the mother. Results are shown in Figure 3 with scores on all scales ranging from 5 to 35, and the following patterns provide evidence of validity:
