Introduction
Defining biologically, the reaction of a person in response to his/her environmental
condition or towards a stimulus is termed as stress. At work, a person faces stress when there
is a mismatch between the resources or
capabilities and the demand of the job. However
certain stress at workplaces is normal but when it exceeds the limit, stress affects a person’s
professional life as well as personal life (Jones & Bright, 2001). It reduces the productivity
of the employee and often affects the health condition (Jones & Bright, 2001).
I worked for call center of a bank as customer service representative where my work
was to attend the calls from customers facing trouble with their credit cards. Initially work
was fun, pay was good and I felt my life was perfect. However due to recession there was
massive lay off and I felt myself lucky to retain my job but soon my perfect life became
imperfect with extended working hours, more work pressure and higher performance
expectation. It was a challenge to maintain my deadline, patience and irritation.
How stress is experienced
Stress is experienced in number of ways. It has been found that the job demand and
employee’s perception to deal with the pressure is often the cause of stress. The various
situations where stress arises are
 Designs of work process allowing less flexibility, no breaks for long time, longer
working hours (Blaug, et.al., 2007),
 certain corporate management has strict work policy which are not friendly to its
employees and does not allow the employee any scope of liberty,
 poor Interpersonal Relationships, multiple Work Roles,
 Career Concerns like job insecurity or low career prospect,
 Environmental Conditions like poor or unsafe work place (Blaug, et.al., 2007)
I faced stresses in my work primarily due to overload of work. As the manpower was
reduced due to recession, the work pressure increased on the existing employees. Moreover
our shift time was increased from 8 hours to 10 hours with no increment in salary.
Management implemented strict performance and review guidelines. Our break time
reduced due to work pressure and we hardly spoke to our colleagues as floor manager
regarded it as misuse of time. Every mistake could cost us our job as a result we became
more worried and anxious at work place...
