Outline Assignment - Sample Outline Topic: Scale and Complexity and the Crisis of Civilization Thesis: The scale and complexity of modern civilization present an important aspect of the crisis we face. This problem can be seen when considering global climate change, peak water, and economic collapses. Each of these issues causes several disastrous effects, and each links to other aspects of civilization’s crisis. 1. What are Scale and Complexity? – Scale and complexity refer to the globe-spanning size of industrial, capitalist civilization, and the immense complexity of our civilization’s systemic interactions. Global Scale – if industrial civilization collapses, there is “nowhere to run, nowhere to hide” Global Scale – leads to global problems that can’t be solved locally Complexity – leads to tipping points and unintended consequences. 2. Examples of Scale and Complexity – Three examples of the problem of scale and complexity are climate change, peak water, and economic collapse. Climate Change – increase in human-caused C02 emissions leading to global warming Peak Water – over-use of fresh water resources Economic Collapse – complex economic interactions that produce system failure 3. Causes of Scale and Complexity – Climate change and peak water are caused by industrial production and industrial agriculture. Economic collapses are caused by government corruption, stock market instability and trade wars. Climate Change – Fossil fuel used in industrial production and transportation, deforestation Peak Water – bulk fresh water use in industrial production and agriculture Economic Collapse – high-risk stock trading, government deregulation, market bubbles, trade wars 4. Impacts of Scale and Complexity and Relation to Other Horsemen – Climate change leads to global warming, drought, sea level rise, and population migration. Peak water leads to water scarcity and lack of water for agriculture. Economic collapse leads to economic and political instability. Climate Change – leads to global warming, drought, sea-level rise, mass population migration, links to stratification and overshoot Peak Water – leads to fresh water scarcity, draining of aquifers, lack of irrigation for agriculture, links to overshoot Economic Collapse – leads to economic and political instability and conflict, links to stratification and oligarchy Conclusion – Global climate change, peak water, and economic collapses are all examples of the problem of scale and complexity Each of these issues causes several disastrous effects, and each links to other aspects of civilization’s crisis. 3
