The Mohawk Nation at Akwesasne, a Native American reservation, has seen a lot of industrial development around their land since the 1950s. At that time, Robert Moses created a hydroelectric dam along the St. Lawrence Seaway that provided energy to everyone in the region except the Mohawk tribe. More development occurred in the region, and these industrial companies contaminated the land, water, and air. This development has changed the Mohawks’ diet from one that consisted mostly of locally caught fish to fatty, salty, and sugary foods, which affects both their cultural practices and health to this day. What concept from class, and the Norgaard et al. (2018) reading, can help us to make sense of this case study?
Colonial ecological violence
Intersectional ecological violence
Ecological symbolic violence
Colonial intersectional violence
