The media has a strong influence in shaping ideas about the family. To facilitate discussion on the latest issues affecting families in America, students will keep abreast of local and national news about the family each week and write a weekly blog about what they learn. You can use theCouncil on Contemporary Families news siteto find stories or use National University Library’s vast newspaper collection to complete this assignment (please watchLibrary Guide for finding news stories).You may also use an online news service or a news blog such asThe Conversation. You may use video or print stories. Choose a story that helps you to understand the history, culture, or current events affecting families in America or a family related story relevant to your professional career goals.To create your blog post you must do a number of things:Discuss the source of the news

  • Identify the news source, the author, the paper and the date of publication.

  • Identify the major issue being presented and identify what kind of information was used (interviews, data, reporting on a new book, report or public policy).

  • What are the three most important points in the story?

  • What is the tone of the story (what position does the author take on the issue)? Discuss how the story tries to shape public opinion about the family.

  • How is the author presenting facts?


Discuss the following questions.

  • Why did you pick this topic? Have these issues affected your own life or the lives of others you know? How so?

  • Have you seen your topic addressed in other media sources? If so, where? How was it discussed?


Connecting the news to our classroom.

  • Explain why the article is important to understanding the history, culture, and current situation of family life in America.

  • Discuss what you learned about family concerns and assessthe story in terms of what you have learned in class.

  • Discuss the media’s role in the shaping of reader’s understanding about the family based on the article.


Post a link to your news article in your blog post and use images to support your post.Read and comment on at least two other blog posts each week.

The article that I have selected is from the Pew Research Centre, which was published on December 17, 2015. The article is about parenting in America that has evolved over the years and what it is now at present. The article that I have chosen is mainly regarding the present family situation in America, where two-parent’s households are declining because of divorce, remarriage, and cohabitation, which are on the rise nowadays. The data presented are analysing the graphs of how the family structure used to be during the 1960s and how they have declined over the period till 2014.
