To facilitate discussion on the latest issues affecting families in America, students will keep abreast of local and national news about the family each week and write a weekly blog about what they learn. Identify the news source, the author, the paper and the date of publication.

Identify the major issue being presented and identify what kind of information was used (interviews, data, reporting on a new book, report or public policy).

What is the tone of the story (what position does the author take on the issue)? Discuss how the story tries to shape public opinion about the family.

How is the author presenting facts?

Discuss the following questions.

Why did you pick this topic? Have these issues affected your own life or the lives of others you know? How so?

Have you seen your topic addressed in other media sources? If so, where? How was it discussed?
