The main task is to find a listing of the most popular books for a age group of 9 years old up to pre adolescent and ebrowse through 2 books. Discuss what you can find about gender socialization for different age groups. Try to select books that are (or were) popular  (as these are what most children are having read to them when they are young and/or what most children are reading in mid to late childhood). Then create your individual summary, possibly including pictures from the book. Be creative.  A few provisos:  · This is an assignment that contributes a significant percentage of points to your final grade; thus your work should reflect that. · Preview books to select some that at least have male and female characters and some rich opportunities for analyses. We are not using a represntative sample, so be sure to select books that you can analyze meaningfully. · Certainly, present enough of the plot so that others understand what the book is about. However, remember the goal of the project -to apply gender concepts/constructs to depictions of male and female characters in children's literature. Be sure to do so explictily. Be sure to cite the text apporpriately when you do so.  To do a qualitative research study on this kind of thing, one would need to conduct a thorough analysis using some specific guidelines.  (For example: all children's books for preschoolers on the best seller list from some time period). Anyway, this is meant to be a hands-on application of some of the concepts from the assigned chapter. Let's see if we find any gender stereotyping in the current children's literature and (if so) let's see when it starts to show up. Also examine any other concepts that come up in the chapter on gender development as they may apply to children's literature. Each student should first post a detailed summary of the plot of the books and an analysis the book using the guiding questions (with visuals if you are able to).   Can use as reference---- http://videolectures.net/bzid2011_mccarthy_fiction/ Consider the following questions (but feel free to go beyond these guiding questions in related areas: Samples of things to look at to draw conclusions*: • Are female figures shown as frequently as male figures? • Are male figures shown as frequently as female figures? • Identify and explain any images, words, phrases you deem to be bias or stereotypical. • Do female and male figures engage equally and cooperatively in activities? • Are females pictured as subservient to males in some way? • Do females have more of their bodies displayed than men? • Are females and males shown in a variety of roles, tasks, or occupations? (e.g., is the mother cooking? ) • Are both females and males given domestic concerns and responsibilities? Are these alluded to for the children in the book in any way? • Do the males or females in the book (adults, children or animal characters that are depicted as gendered) express any emotions? If so are there any differences in the emotions expressed based on gender?

“Owl Babies” is a modern classic written by Martin Waddell. He wrote this book for children and it is one of the most read books among children. It is a story of three baby owls who woke up one night. When looked around they found that their mother has gone. They move out of their nest and sit on branch waiting for her. At last, she returns and owlets bounce with joy and happiness.
