The Great Pand-Active….Or Not? In the spring of 2020, the United States shutdown as COVID-19 was on the rise. In this project, we investigate how activity was affected for three respondents compared to activity prior to the pandemic. Many workers in the US (non-essential) were unemployed or working remotely in March and April of 2020. Did remote work and unemployment have an impact on activity for these workers? That is what we will examine. For the project you and your group members will: 1. Access the step data via the Google Docs link below. For the data, you will find three participants and each participant’s step data for January, February, March, and April. · You can copy this data into your actual Excel software (recommended and easier to navigate than Google sheets). It is most easily done via copying the whole sheet via the top left corner arrow. Then, in your new Excel document, select the left corner arrow again and paste. *A copy will not work from Sheets to Excel in my experience if you only select one cell to copy it to because there is more data to transfer than the one cell. · Notice there are four tabs at the bottom of the sheets (1 each for each month January-April) · Option to Make it Your Own: If your group would like to make it your own for fun and to connect to the data, you can input three or more of your own step data from a smart watch to analyze from the months of January-April. You will also need to write down each of your responses from the survey below to use in your project write up. · Below, in the “Links” section (bottom of page 2 of this document), you will see the links to the step data, the Google Form survey, and the survey results. You will use all three in your written report. 2. The Analysis: For this section of the project you will complete the below tasks: a. Data Depiction i. Choose two data depictions from a histogram, parallel box plot or scatter plot to depict the data. You will want to consider why you are choosing which two data displays as you will discuss this in your written analysis. ii. You will display data for each of the three respondents from the provided data (or your group members). Consider what will allow you to best compare the data on an individual basis for each respondent as well as for comparing the three respondents. Again, you will justify this decision in your writing. b. Data Analysis & Written Report You will be writing a report like you were giving a professional analysis to one of your respondents from the step data. Please include the following: i. Give a brief introduction (3-5 complete sentences) on what the research investigates. What is the problem at hand or question you wanted to answer in the research? Identify the respondent to whom you are writing the analysis. (10 points) ii. Include images of your data depictions from section (a) above. Insert these into the written report. One easy way to do this on a PC is to search “snipping tool” or use Command + Shift + 4 on a Mac. Both will capture a selection of your screen. Then, you can save the snip and insert as an image. (3 points) iii. Title your data depictions and give a summary sentence under each image letting readers know what each display. (2 points) iv. Explain to the respondent what the data depictions say about their step data. · Justify why you chose each data depiction for analysis. · Use statistical language to explain what the depictions say about their step data and how it compares to that of the other respondents. Use what you have learned thus far about these data depictions. How does their data compare to the group as a whole? · If using a box plot, what does each portion of the plot tell the reader? If using a histogram, what is the shape of the distribution? Is it skewed, symmetric, are there outliers, is it unimodal, bimodal, etc. Would it be viewed as “normal” and could be analyzed as such? For a scatterplot, what is the association? Does it appear to be weak, moderate or strong? Linear? These questions will get you started. · This section should be one to two paragraphs in complete sentences. You should work to be concise in your writing while still fully explaining the data and leaving no or few questions to the reader. (15 points) v. Interpret the Survey · How was the data collected? Use Chapter 10 to identify a possible sampling method. · Do you predict any bias in the way the data was collected? Was it collected randomly? · What additional questions would you like to ask the respondent that would help in your analysis? · From the respondent’s survey results, interpret what might have skewed their data or presented outliers. List any other observations. (10 points) vi. Conclusion · Summarize your overall findings and state a conclusion of what you observed from the data and analysis of this respondent. · What limitations did you experience in the analysis and research? That is, what would you do different if you were conducting this research start to finish or were going to run a similar study? · What questions remain that you would like to answer if the research was continued or repeated?
