You may have filled one of these out back in September. 2) Now look at the pages of tables, “DAY” and “NIGHT”. “DAY” gives responses to these questions from 24 students who, in happier times, took this class during the day. (They are given ID #s from 1 to 24. The ID #s are intended to help you match student responses from different pages. For example, on one page, you learn that student #10 earns somewhere between $450 and $600 per week, and, on the other page, you learn this same student #10 works 30 to 50 hours per week.) “NIGHT” does the same thing for 22 students from night sections of this class, who are given ID #s 25 to 46. Your task will be to summarize portions of the data for the purpose of comparing day students with night students. You can pick one variable to summarize for “day” students and “night” students; follow instructions under that heading below. (Example: who spends more time working at a job each week, day students or night students? Summarize the “JOB” variable [# hrs worked per week] for each group.) You can pick two variables and analyze the relationship between them, doing this again for both “day” and “night”. (Example: how does “hrs. worked” affect “hrs. spent studying”? Does “hrs. worked” seem to affect one of the groups more strongly than it does the other?) – Again, find specific instructions for this option below. ONE VARIABLE  Find at least one description of center (mean, median)  Draw at least one graph (histogram, boxplot) that will indicate spread and shape.  Write a short paragraph summarizing your findings and comparing the two groups. (ex.-- Who worked longer hours overall, day or night students? -- Did outliers or skew in the data affect results? -- etc) TWO VARIABLES  Draw scatterplots (one for “day” one for “night”), using the explanatory variable (ex. “hrs worked”) as x and response variable (ex. “hrs studied”) as y.  Calculate r for each group and use it to describe the correlation.  Write a short paragraph summarizing your findings and comparing the two groups. (ex. – Did hrs spent at work seem to cut into study time? – Was this effect stronger for one group of students than the other? – etc) Each paper will be equivalent to a hand-in assignment: 10 pts for meeting the requirements and presenting results accurately and clearly, with opportunity to raise scores by fixing mistakes and/or answering questions I still have.
