Colonization of the African countries began in roughly 1870’s and became apparent and open after the Be
rlin Act of 1885. Africa was seen as a nation full of raw resources that the Western countries needed in order to process in their industries. It was also seen as a market for the sale of the surplus produce made by these industries. Gradually as Africans realized the agenda of the western nations, they struggled and gained their independence gradually by the 1960s. The Western nations were driven by greed and opportunistic attitudes in their colonization of Africa.
The Berlin Conference can be considered a historic international conference that was attended by many independent nations. Unlike other conferences that were usually held after wars to discuss the repercussions, the berlin conference can be said to have marked the beginning of colonization of Africa. The conclusion of the Berlin Act set the stage and established the conditions necessary for the colonization at multiple levels (Duthie).
The Berlin Conference was held by Germany’s Bismarck and was unique in that Bismarck was only a young ruler, hand his term hadn’t even crossed 15 years. His aim of setting up such a conference was to establish his presence as an international player, as well as secure material interests for his country.
