The “Geography I ES 1101 Unit 04 Exercise: Temperature Analysis with Excel (Submit both this file and your excel file) PART ONE: Lat. Region Location J F M A M J J A S O N D 0 Low lat. Enter the above data table into an Excel spreadsheet. Keep all labels. 2. On two new columns to the right of the monthly temperature readings, calculate the annual average and annual range of each city’s temperatures. 3. Draw the curves of each city’s monthly temperature change (or draw selected curves that help your answer to question 5). Insert your chart here. 4. Save your spreadsheet as your last name.xls. 5. Report here the annual range and annual average of each city and their latitude, altitude degrees. Explain the obvious differences in their annual range and annual average in terms of differences in latitude and latitude, as well as location on the continent. PART TWO: 1. With your excel spreadsheet, click on the bottom ‘sheet2’ to start a new sheet. 2. Go to website https://www.usclimatedata.com/ 3. Choose any three cities that are of interest to you to look at their climate data 4. Enter the data into your spreadsheet (same as before, columns are months). Enter both ‘Average High’ and ‘Average Low’ as two separate rows for each city. 5. Below each city’s two rows, add a new row, name it “average”. 6. Calculate this row by using the equation: average = (average high + average low)/2 7. On two new columns right to the monthly temperature readings, calculate the annual average and annual range of each city’s temperatures (using the newly calculated average) 8. Draw the curves of each city’s monthly temperature change (just the monthly average). Again, watch instructor’s demonstration if you are not familiar with charting with Excel. 9. Save your spreadsheet. 10. Report here the annual range and annual average of each city and their latitude, altitude (you may obtain this by clicking on “Geo & Map” tab of the city’s page. Explain the differences and similarities in their annual range and annual average in terms of differences in latitude and altitude, as well as location on the continent (i.e. west coast vs. inland location) PART THREE: 1. With your excel spreadsheet, click on the bottom ‘sheet3’ to start a new sheet. The table below shows some upper air data collected at a mid-latitude station (38°N) during January and July of one year. Table. Average temperature at different heights for a mid-latitude weather station January Temp. (°C) January Height (m) July Temp. (°C) July Height (m) -3 400 19.6 400 -0.6 1510 17.2 1590 -6.8 3250 7.4 3250 -21.7 5680 -8.6 6000 -46.9 9320 -35.4 9840 -63.2 11980 -54.7 12600 -62.4 13830 -63.3 14440 -60.5 16410 -66.1 16950 -58.7 20790 -55.6 21350 -56.7 24070 -49.8 24710 2. Using the first two columns of the table above, with Excel, plot temperature versus height for January. (Please watch class demonstration carefully for the graph type). Answer the following two questions with the graph. Question 1: What was the altitude of the tropopause at this station during January? Question 2: A “temperature inversion” is happening in January, at what altitude? Using the last two columns of the table above, with Excel, plot temperature versus height for July. Answer the following question with the graph. Question 3: What is the altitude of the tropopause in July? How and why is it different from January?
