The Garifuna people are descended from West African slaves and the Arawak. The British relocated the Garifuna to an island off the coast of Honduras. Now numbering some 600,000, the Garifuna live in Central America and as immigrant populations in the United States. With their own language, music, and religion, the Garifuna have strong ties to their culture.
