The G7 and several EU countries were central in the 2009 network. In addition, Brazil and Russia emerged as core countries integrating more peripheral nations. Brazil linked South America, and Russia, the former Soviet Republics. Additionally, there were regional, cultural, and linguistic groupings: a Latin American group, cliques centered on Russia and China, and a Scandinavian group.
