Sony PSN cyber security breach 
Sony’s PlayStation an era of gaming consoles started with the first version of PlayStation 1 in the year 
December 1994, which was taken over by PlayStation 2(PS2) in the year 2000. The latest version in 
the gaming console is PlayStation 3 (PS3) released in the year 2006.  
Along with the PlayStation 3 Sony launched the online service to be accessible with its consoles like 
PS3 and PSP. It provided users many features like downloading content, games, demos etc. Online 
mode of communicating with other members of the PSN community. On 4

 may 2011, Sony revealed 
the incident of security breach in their network, which has almost 77 million numbers of users from 
which around 2.2 million used to buy various contents and services of the PSN via credit cards. The 
information stored of all the users along with their personal information of the accounts as well as the 
credit card information was hacked and stolen from the secure Sony servers. The users of all over the 
world were affected. Experts say if the Sony has revealed the security breach earlier, then the 
affecting user base could have been lower. (Sony PlayStation suffers massive data breach, 2011) 
Sony’s security failed big time, their PSN which was considered to be very secure system over the 
years but the breach created a sudden panic among the number of users of the PSN, the outbreak cost 
millions of dollars to Sony in terms of revenue and the Image of the company also got affected really 
bad. Several cases of unlawful and lack of security were filed on the Sony including Govt. 
intervention which caused the company to totally shut down PSN for up-gradation of the security so 
that such incident should not occur in the future. Sony’s poor judgment and lapse in ethical conduct 
lead to the security breach, now Sony have given the Welcome Back Promotional offer its users with 
lots of goodies but which could not make up for the loss of the PSN users and the Corporate loss to 
the company because of the security breach.
