The following data are from Charles Muller’s (1967) Etude de Statistique Lexicale. The data list 10 of Corneille’s 32 dramas and give the approximate date of composition and the mean number of words in each line of verse.

a) Make a hypothesis about the relationship between date of composition and number of words per verse in Corneille’s plays. For example, you might think that Corneille will become more verbose, or alternatively, more concise, as he becomes more experienced at writing plays.

b) Create a scatterplot for the data. Decide whether a linear model is appropriate for the data.

c) Calculate Spearman’s rank correlation for the Corneille drama data. In terms of your calculated ρ, how strong is the relationship between the date of composition and the number of words in each line of verse? Was your hypothesis confirmed or disconfirmed?
