or the purpose of enhancing the understanding of motivation in workplace are Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene Theory, and Skinner’s Reinforcement Theory.
Comparison
    The three theories can be compared and contrasted on the basis of their individual influence on human motivation in contemporary work settings.
    The five tier model of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs can be divided into deficiency needs and growth needs. The five stages from the lowest section of the pyramid are physiological needs (food, clothing, water), safety needs (security), needs for belongingness and love (interpersonal relationships), esteem needs (prestige, feeling of accomplishment) and self-actualisation (achievement of full potential). The base four stages of the hierarchy, which is broadly divided into physiological needs and psychological needs are termed as deficiency needs. The topmost stage of the hierarchy is termed as the growth needs. Deficiency needs arise due to the issue of deprivation which leads to a sense of motivation for the employees, when the needs are not met. According to Stewart, Nodoushani and Stumpf (2018), the motivation of the employees gradually increase depending on the duration for which the needs are denied. However, when the needs are met, the amount of motivation deteriorates drastically. Growth needs, also known as self-actualisation, increases motivation of the employees as they are met. It does not develop from a sense of lack, but stems from a desire to grow as an individual.
