Introduction
380,000 are the number of positive cases reported due to the emerging and spreading Coronavirus pandemic across the continents. Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases originally was reported on 31 December 2019 from Wuhan, China due to human consumption of infected animals. Within next 2 months, it was declared as an epidemic, which soon turned into pandemic due to its global spread across the continents. This has resulted into complete shutdowns of business trade, travel and even domestic functioning of civilians in order to maintain social distance.
It would be essential to consider that till now, no full proof vaccine or medication for this disease have been reported; therefore, there are no evidences to support the ends of this disease. For as long as its outbreak will spread and persist, huge loss to humanity in terms of life and resources has been predicted. This article will focus upon the global impacts of coronavirus on international systems if the virus is effectively contained within the end of 2020 summer.
Impact of COVID-19 on the Global Economy
It would be essential to consider and monitor the extent of the spread for this virus because it will be a major determinant of how much economic support from the government will be required during and after immediate impact of the epidemic. According to the data provided by CSIS, Chinese economy is expected to face worse than the expected or initial forecast. China’s export fell by 17.2% within 2 months, January and February (Azour).
One of the major aspects is not related to the fall of economy but to the recovery because there is not estimated period suggested, under which the pandemic might stop (Segal and Dylan). Further, even if the outbreak has been reported to slow down in China, other countries such as Europe, Iran, U.S, India, Korea and much more are under the impact of pandemic. Therefore, the import export would still be affected. Likewise, it would be essential to consider that countries such as Japan and Europe were already suffering from recession, as evident from their fourth quarter performance from 2019 and increased reliance on trade activities.
Further, not every country may have equal resources in order to combat the outbreak. Poor countries such as South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia, Italy, other Asian countries may have to invest highly into their healthcare during and even after outbreak; as a result, a steep fall in the economy of these countries is expected. Moreover, compared to other countries such as China and U.S these poor countries may require much longer to settle their economy and again step foot in global trade activities.
Trade Affected due to Covid-19
Since the trade activities, including imports and exports will be blocked; therefore, economic slowdowns will ultimately lead to lower energy demands. Producers may respond to this by cutting the supply to buoy prices. This would be evident from the cutting down of petroleum supply by up to 1.5 million barrels per day as decided by the members of organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) (Segal and Dylan).
Likewise, uncoordinated policy settlements,...
