The concept of the crime prevention triangle simply states that for a crime to occur all three elements of the triangle must exist:

  1. DESIRE

  2. ABILITY

  3. OPPORTUNITY

By eliminating any one of these elements a crime cannot occur.

Let's look closer at each of these elements.

  • DESIRE

    • The desire of a criminal to commit a crime.

    • We as citizens cannot affect or remove a criminal’s desire to commit a crime. If someone really wants to commit a crime they will.

  • ABILITY

    • The criminal's ability to commit a crime.

    • We cannot affect the ability of a criminal to commit a crime. They will find a way. They can be thousands of miles away, use telephones, internet...Not even physical impairment will stop some from committing crimes.

  • OPPORTUNITY

    • The criminal's opportunity to commit crimes.

It is at this point that we can take the appropriate action to prevent crime. By removing the criminal’s opportunity for crime to occur through education, we have broken the "Crime Prevention Triangle" cycle.

Crime triangle is also known as problem analysis tr
iangle. It is a model, which is used to understand the recurring issue of crimes. The problem analysis triangle is developed from the routine activity theory. As mentioned by Santos (2016), according to the routine activity theory, the crime to occur required three main conditions, which is offender, suitable target, time, and place. This means crime occurs when likely criminal and suitable target meet in the same place at same time, in the absence of the guardian of the target.
This theory takes the existence of the likely offender as for granted because simple human greed or their selfishness become enough motivating factor for the commitment of the crime. The inanimate target and human victims are not kept as distinct actor as both fulfil the purpose of the offender (Arizona State University, 2019). The capable guardian was considered as either human actor or security device.
In simple context, crime triangle includes three elements, which is offender, victim or target and place. This makes the inner triangle. This inner triangle of the crime triangle ensures...
