The Community College of Baltimore County Global Education Curriculum Project Title: How the global factors affect the world population growth  Assignment points: This assignment is worth 100 points, which is 8% of the total points for this course. Course: Math 165 Section XDS PreCalculus II In the Population Project, students will deepen their understanding of exponential growth by researching and analyzing a country’s population growth every decade over a 50-year period. With this information, students will model the population graphically, make predictions about the country’s current and future population, describe the country and its population trends, present their findings and analyze the impact of global factors in population growth. Objectives · The student will be able to collect, organize, analyze, and present population data using their knowledge of exponential growth · The student will be able to model population by creating exponential equations and graphs. · The student will be able to use exponential equations and graphs to make predictions. · The student will be able to understand and describe exponential growth. · The student will be able to correctly use and explain the formula. · The student will be able to make predictions using the information they’ve found and developed. · The student will be able to identify and analyze global factors which impact the population growth. Resources · Attached Population Project handout (1 per student) · Attached Assessment · Library access for books on various countries · The Research Assistance Program offered through the CCBC library. Here is the link to request assistance to do research and work on your assignments. http://library.ccbcmd.edu/screens/rap.html You could make an appointment and get a librarian's undivided attention during your appointed time. · Notes on exponential growth, textbook and other class materials. · DESMOS · https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/ · https://population.un.org/wpp/ · http://worldpopulationreview.com/ · https://www.infoplease.com/world/population-statistics/total-population-world-decade-1950-2050 · https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dErjKCFakKo ASSESSMENT · Attached is the Assessment list for the Population Project. · The assessment focuses on the student’s successful completion of the project, how they’ve presented their work, if they are able to discuss and explain what they’ve done, and the correctness of their graph and formula. · Completing the task itself is important since the goal of this activity is to deepen students’ understanding of exponential growth by modeling real population data. · Complete a short oral presentation which must include, countries names and flags, demographic information for each selected country, their current population size, global factors and geographical location. EVALUATION CRITERIA · Students will be evaluated on the correctness of the mathematical models (graph, equation, and table) of the two selected country’s population, their ability to meaningfully present their findings. · The comparison of their findings and how well they will make their predictions. · The way they will analyze the population growth and the impact of global factors on the population growth. Knowledge · Students should understand families of functions, especially exponential and logarithmic functions. · They should know and understand the characteristics of these functions and their graphs. · Students should understand the number e and the formula. · Students should understand population and what a census is. · Student should be operating with DESMOS to create exponential functions and models, graphing these models, and writing equations. · Students will begin to express ideas of exponential growth in the real-world context of population. · Students will discuss these mathematical ideas in terms of modeling situations, not creating situations to fit information that they already know. · Students should take this project and consider the information gained from a census and how population growth affects civilizations, natural resources and global factors. Global Population Growth Project · Please use Times New Roman font, font size 12, single spaced word document to type out your answers, APA format. · Select two countries of your interest in different continents · Give a brief background of the two countries you selected. The brief description should include (location, dominant language and current population) · Use the skills taught in class to develop the proper exponential equation that accurately describes the population growth every decade over the 50-year period since 1960. · Use the following links to access the data: · https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/ · https://population.un.org/wpp/ · http://worldpopulationreview.com/ · https://www.infoplease.com/world/population-statistics/total-population-world-decade-1950-2050 · Create a table of your data for each of the two countries selected. · The first x-coordinate should be entered as zero representing the year 1960. · Use DESMOS to create a graphical representation of your data. · Please use the following link to get direction on how to generate the graph using DESMOS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dErjKCFakKo · According to the information, the population has increased, decreased or remained the same. · Predict the current population of each of the two countries selected and their population in the next decade and discuss how you made this prediction. · Growth rate is the number of people born minus the number of people that die. Most countries are trying to reduce their growth rate. Zero population growth means that as many people are being born as there are dying - to achieve zero population growth, each couple would need to have no more than two children (to replace the parents). · Find the value of between each decade; explain how the value of growth rate is computed using your data set. · Identify some of the global factors that should be considered in population growth and prediction. · Which of following global factors, healthcare, availability of birth control, political and economic stability, government stability, family planning, war, food availability, space, technology, culture-social norms, religious beliefs and gender equality, affect the growth of the population for the two countries selected. · What global factors contributed to the population growth in the last 50 years? · Analyze the impact of global factors on population growth for each selected countries. · Compare the results and draw conclusion for each selected country. Global Project Assessment # ELEMENT POSSIBLE POINTS POINTS EARNED 1 Student participated in the global project. 5 2 Student turned in their project. 5 3 Student included a table of the data. 10 4 Student created a mathematical model and generated an exponential graph related to population growth. 20 5 Student made prediction for the population of each country. 15 6 Student identified the global factors and analyzed them. 10 7 Student provided a report on the impact of global factors for each of selected countries. 15 8 Student’s work was well organized. 10 9 Student can explain their reasoning for their ideas, formulas, and work. 10
