Introduction
Power is an absolute term and may have multiple understanding and multiple meanings depending upon the action of the word. Power is an intentional influence that one person has over another in the domains of beliefs, emotions, knowledge, behaviour etc. Leadership is a style of power which a person executes. Without Leadership [power], in the fields of politics, medical, financial, spiritual, organisational activities and society, no cooperation would exist. The understanding of the activities and the functioning of the organisations take place due to the fact that leadership [an authority with power] is present in the organisation who take care of the functioning of the system.
Most of the current theories which define and analyse power and it’s operations are based on the theories and analysis conducted by French and Raven over the past 40 years. 5 basic principles of the sources of power are identified
1. Reward Power: People’s compliance can be ensured with the use of Rewards as an incentive. To be more effective, the person should have knowledge about the reward that would please the target group
2. Expert Power: With time and experience, knowledge increases which may lead to being an expert, thus ‘credibility’ is important. Hence knowledge leads to bringing a person to a level of leadership with experience
3. Coercive Power: Coercive power is the use of threats and punishment to achieve one’s goals. E.g. removal of non-performing staff
4. Legitimate Power: The power to act in a particular way with an influence over the resources in a legitimate way
5. Referent Power: This source of power is developed by the personality of the person. It is generally known as personal power and comes from the high regard held by others.
Conflict is the argument and the friction that is a result of the actual or perceived incompatibilities and differences with others and their responsibilities. Conflict may or may not be unhealthy and conflict may be most active when the groups are just formed and people are adjusting to each other’s way of thought. The best of the teams perform when they keep aside their conflicts. (Northouse, P.G., 2018. )
Conflict resolution is a way in which peaceful methods are used to resolve and end the conflicts and de-escalate the conflict to the higher level. Another way of ending a conflict is with the use of harsh coercive power and harming the other party’s interest. It is very difficult to handle a conflict where one party’s basic needs are also not satisfied. Such conflicts are deep rooted and intractable.
