Choosing and writing a dissertation Understanding the key principles 2 At the end of this session the student will: ❖ understand what is meant by a dissertation ❖ gain further insight into how to choose a topic relevant to the dissertation requirements ❖ understand how to find articles/papers relevant to the chosen dissertation topic ❖ Consider critiquing skills in relation to reading, interpretation, and relaying a summary of the key points in the literature. Intended learning outcomes 3 A dissertation is a long, or an extended, essay on a particular subject, and is usually especially written toward the gaining of a university degree. It is a formal piece of writing (pay attention to spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary). It has a distinct structure to ensure clarity of meaning in the content i.e. expressing what the student wishes to convey to the reader/academic marker(s). Choose your topic and discuss with your tutor its suitability in relation to meeting the dissertation requirements. What is a dissertation? 4 • 7,000 words in length excluding the reference list. • Focus is on management and leadership. Not clinically focused. • Uses 5 published articles or papers relating to the chosen topic on management and leadership in Practice. • Uses a recognised critiquing model for reviewing the established literature. • The dissertation should show how the student would apply the knowledge gained to develop his/her future practice as a registered nurse. • A dissertation for the Level 6 module on Management and Leadership in Practice 5 • Time management • Communication • The dynamics of teams/Partnership working • Using Emotional Intelligence • Change management • Policies as drivers of change • Governance • Organisational structures • Leadership and management • Leadership styles • Motivational theory • Facilitating learning in practice Remember the module topics covered in Leadership and Management in Practice 6 ❑ Introduction. Introducing the topic and why you think it is important to nursing, and to your ongoing professional development. Remember to include the most relevant aspects of the NMC Code (2018). ❑ The body of the extended essay, where the chosen 5 articles or papers are summarily presented, and their relevance to the chosen topic is highlighted. ❑ A more in-depth critique of each paper where each paper’s strengths and weaknesses is discussed in relation to the chosen topic. ❑ A synthesis (a bringing together) of all the main points in the critique of the chosen established literature. Remember to include citations (references) from authors, other than authors of your chosen papers, who agree/disagree with the points being made. ❑ A conclusion. Remember to include how the literature findings will influence your practice. Structure of a dissertation 7 Use a notable literature searching engine. Hare are some examples, but remember your topic is not to be clinically focused. Medical search engines: PubMed Ovid Web of Science Science Direct Scopus Cochrane Library Google Scholar Choosing the 5 published articles/papers 8 The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL) The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) library and journal publications Nursing Research National Institute of Nursing Research BPPU may have subscriptions to key nursing journals such as the British Journal of Nursing etc. so always use your Athens Account. If the paper you wish to see is not accessible online then contact BPPU library services. Also try Google Scholar for papers on management and leadership. Nursing Search Engines 9 Do not confuse critiquing with criticising Critiquing means evaluating the published content of a paper in a detailed and analytical way in relation to your chosen topic. When critiquing a paper include the following: • a description of the content. Precise and to the point. The aim is to give the reader a sense of the author’s overall purpose. • an interpretation in which you state the significance of parts of the text. • an analysis as to how the language and structural content of the text conveys its intended meaning. • an assessment in which give a judgement of the paper’s worth to your chosen topic. Critiquing a paper 10 When synthesising you note the shared commonalities in the 5 selected papers. You also note any significant differences in the selected papers in terms of content, findings, and the concluding comments. Remember to keep a focus on your chosen topic. Remember to incorporate self-reflection in showing how your analysis of your 5 chosen papers will affect your practice. Synthesising the findings of each of your 5 chosen papers 11 In addition to the 5 chosen papers that centre on your chosen topic, reference • other authors from relevant textbooks • authors of relevant published papers, other than your 5 chosen/selected papers • authors of relevant master’s dissertations, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) theses housed in the libraries of the awarding universities • authors of relevant presentation papers given at conferences • writers of journal editorials where the editorial content is relevant to your chosen topic. Referencing – use the Harvard system 12 Remember, what you wish to raise others might wish to raise as well, and the point/s concerned could be important. This is your learning time, and your learning opportunity so never feel you have to hold back from asking questions. Any questions or comments?
