The 4 questions are based on the 4 Harvard cases from the packet cases you purchased. This sheet lists the questions you are to answer in a 4 page (max) “paper”. The paper is NOT a research paper, but simply answering the questions below. Grading will be based on quality, not quantity. Just because you fill up 4 pages, don’t expect to necessarily get an A if you don’t have the correct answers. The paper format is described at bottom of this sheet, and be sure to follow the format else points will be deducted. The answers to the questions are ONLY to be based on facts from the cases as well as relevant lecture slides. However, these questions will require some of your own thinking as well. Any facts you mention in your answers that come from outside the article or class (e.g. internet sites) will be ignored when grading. Q1. Garrard (Essay) MNEs typically do not follow either extreme of a global integration or local responsiveness strategy, but rather seek to achieve a balance between them in a way which maximizes sales but minimizes costs among countries in their geographic footprint. How is Garrard S.A.’s (not just Japan sub) balance between global integration and local responsiveness implemented in all aspects of its operations? Aspects to think about are: product, distribution channels, organizational structure between HQ and country subsidiaries and power in decision making, company values, IT control systems, marketing, etc. Give your reasons as to why each of these, and other, aspects are more global, local, or in between. Q2. NAFTA Case (Essay) – We said that Free Trade is a win-win situation for all countries’ citizens, in the long run. For the NAFTA agreement, and for the US and Mexico only: 2a. Who (people, industries, regions) were hurt by NAFTA in the short run? 2b. Who (people, industries, regions) benefitted from NAFTA? Note: Give specific examples, numbers, etc. – don’t discuss in generalities Q3. US-China Trade War Case (Several sentences can answer these questions) 3a. According to the case, what were the 2 primary reasons that US had justification for starting a trade war with China? Explain these 2 reasons. 3b. How do these hurt US businesses? Q4. Greek Crisis Case (Essay) 4a. What is populism (from definition in lecture)? 4b. From the 1980s to just prior to the crisis, what were the government’s social policies that gave evidence to practices of populism in Greece? 4c. From the 1980s to just prior to the crisis, what were the practices and data regarding tax collection that gave evidence to practices of populism in Greece? Note: for 4b and 4c give specific examples, numbers, years, etc. – don’t discuss in generalities Point distribution: Q1 - 25; Q2 - 25; Q3 – 20; Q4 - 30 Format: A “paper” is at most 4 double spaced pages (-5 pts for every page over 4). You do NOT need to repeat the questions in the paper text; but do type the question # and then your answer. For example “2.” in front of the answer for 2 is sufficient . Answers to questions are to be in full sentences – no phrases or bullets (-5 if not). It is to be typed in Times Roman font, 12 point (-5 if not) , double spaced (-10 if not) with 1 inch margins all around (-5 if not). In other words, don’t deviate from the format specified.
