The bulk density of soil (x, in g/cm3 ) affects plant growth, specifically, how easily roots can penetrate the soil. A group of carrot growers conducted a study to compare soil bulk density with soil texture (y), measured on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being very sandy soil and 10 corresponding to clay. A random sample of plots was obtained, and the data were recorded. Compute Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, and use this value to describe the relationship between these two variables.
In January 2014 a polar vortex caused extreme weather conditions across Canada and much of the United States. Travel was treacherous, and countless flights were canceled at various airports. The severe cold at Pearson International Airport in Toronto caused at least 200 flights to be delayed, and additional police were needed to deal with irate passengers. A random sample of passengers in the airport was obtained, and the number of days delayed and the systolic blood pressure of each was recorded. vortex a. Compute Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. b. Use the value of rS to describe the relationship between days delayed and systolic blood pressure, which is related to stress.
