The broadcast was a coproduction involving 18 broadcast organizations and reaching an audience of approximately 400 million—by far the largest television audience in history at the time. While the scale of the broadcast clearly points toward television becoming a global medium, it must also be noted that even if 18 broadcast organizations were involved, the BBC was taking the lead and making the final decisions.
