The basic 1/0 needs of early programs were fairly modest. Some applications, however, had somewhat more complex needs. In many cases the functions provided by the monitor were much slower than equivalent functions that were in the BIOS code. What did the application programmers do when the functions the OS provided hid the functions that the application needed or were so slow that the performance of the application was unacceptable? What problems did that cause?
