The barrel vault problem consists of a cylindrical roof with “rigid” supports at edges x = ±a/2 while edges at y = ±b/2 are free. The shell is assumed to deform under its own weight (i.e. q acts vertically down, not perpendicular to the surface of the shell). The geometric and material data of the problem are (see Fig. 8.3.4).
