Note: I want this to be assigned to someone that could be able to assist me and help me throughout the whole process in case the idea is picked. For now, I will only need part 1 and 2. I have attached also the instructions of what the project consist of.

1. The paper will explore the impact of the recent EU Directive (AIFMD) regarding Alternative Investment Fund Management (AIFM) on this market segment. The organizational structure of an RE AIF is a distributed model where very little operational structure is managed within the fund but rather the essential business activities are contracted by the fund to experts in each area business services; Investment Manager, Depository, Fund Adminstrator, middle office, tax management, assurance (internal and external audit), property managers, brokers, etc.In most cases the AIF was organized by a "sponsor" and they exert significant influence and control in the pre AIFMD structure but their influence is "displaced" in the post AIFMD world. We will explore the exisitng risk culture of an RE AIF and the impact of inserting an independent third party (AIFM) into the ecosystem of the fund, the changes required to establish an effective risk management framework and managing the regulatory risk created by the AIFMD. The specific areas to explore are Risk Culture, Enterprise Wide Risk Management Framework, Risk Measurement with difficult to value assets, Conflict of Interest policies, vendor management, reporting to the fund investor all occurring in the midst of regulatory expectations still being defined. A recent news bulletin issued by Morrison Foerster on the issues facing Non-EU AIF's is attached for a reference point.

1. I have an idea that has the potential to address an industry risk. The project requires risk expertise, deep analysis, reading, discussions, surveys, subject matter expert feedback and report writing skills. I believe that a well thought out report can help enterprises prevent major systemic risks to industry. As we have heard from Prof. Walter and Prof. Sundaram, operational lack of controls have created huge financial and reputation losses for companies, be they financial or manufacturing industries. I propose a project where we select the bigger CRISES and analyses these major CRISES events/episodes (industry agnostic). We look at what caused them, who was involved, why did it happen and also look at global best practices which are available to mitigate these risks. Then we can build a control and governance framework and share it in the form of a Management report. Practicing Risk Managers across industries can potentially benefit from reading the material, evaluating their current risk internal control environment and adopt our suggestions, if they deem fit. I look forward to hearing from you and discuss further on the merits of the project.
