The artist Titus Kamphor asked the question, on the Ted Talk Stage, in 2017, “can art amend history?” For centuries, artists and writers have been asking similar questions. Now, we will be too.

For our fourth paper, we will be reading and exploring the debate around the statue of Theodore Roosevelt at the Museum of Natural History and listening to Titus Kamphor’s Ted Talk, “Can Art Amend History?” before conducting our own investigations into the question and answering it using specific examples (of your choice) from art (or music, or literary) history.

For this paper, you will be:

  1. Thinking about what role you think art plays in social change and, based on your research, developing an informed conclusion, or claim, which answers the questions “can art (and/ or writing) amend history” and “can it change our future?”

  1. Reading commentary from Titus Kamphor, as well as doing your own investigation. Think about instances in which art or writing has caused a conversation which has led to change, or instances in which conversation has been stifled. You may choose to focus on a particular artist, or on a movement (for example, similar to how many activists are calling for the removal of the statue of Roosevelt at the Museum of Natural History, many activists are calling for the tearing down of statues depicting figures from the confederacy) in order to hone in on your argument. However you choose to support your claim, make sure you return to the question “can art/ writing amend history, can it change our future?”

  1. Writing 1,200 words elaborating on your research and conclusions.

** Papers should be 1,200 words, double spaced, Times New Roman font. They should have a strong thesis statement and should demonstrate deep engagement with the topic. Papers should cite sources in MLA format and should include a Works Cited page. Rough drafts, peer reviews, and rubrics should be attached to the final paper.

Introduction
Arts and artists are the backbone of cultural expressions of people; they do not live on the periphery o
f society but rather into the centre of it (Rodriguez, 2013). In fact, the world has evolved over the course of time in terms of politics, economy and social values as well. arts stands right in the centre of all these changes, tracking and reflecting the changes effectively (Rodriguez, 2013). The artists are, as Aristotle once stated, the observers of these social changes sensitively. They grow up with an extremely brilliant mind which allows them to see and react over the changes. Their productions are rich enough to make sure that the posterity sees the history through their eyes. In United States, arts amends history because it gives space, power and freedom of expression of views in a fine manner that is alleviated from political, social and economical biases of people; it helps in showcasing faults of the past that people of the present and future generation should review.
Art and Allocation of Space
At first, it is significant to note that art gives space to the artist who presents history in his or her own way (Rodriguez, 2013). This space is not physical but rather spiritual, a thought process initiates in the mind of the artist who views any social, political or economical bias or improvement. For example, in the political spheres of today, people see elections, wins of their favorite candidates and ruling of democrats or republicans. What people do not see is the undercurrent, the tension and climax which remains hidden from the eyes of the general public (Rodriguez, 2013). To justify it, it can be said that artists are the people who bring reality to the surface, “Artists are represented here on the side of ideas, in the “heart space.” Art is uniquely positioned to move people—inspiring them, inciting new questions and provoking curiosity or outrage. Normally, and especially when we are in campaign mode, we tend to think about what artists can contribute to the action space. We think about how artists can strengthen the will and push people to act. But we should also ask ourselves, “What are the valuable contributions artists can make in the idea space?” Artists don’t think like policy folks. They...
