The American Heart Association (AHA) and Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation guidelines urge greater availability of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and people trained to use them. AEDs are used in cardiac arrest situations for:
1. Early defibrillation in cases of atrial fibrillation.
2. Cardioversion in cases of atrial fibrillation.
3. Pacemaker placement.
4. Early defibrillation in cases of ventricular fibrillation.
