The aim of this assessment is to develop a student’s capacity to critically review, evaluate and synthesise current evidenced based literature as it relates to bedside clinical handover. Specifically, the student is required to explore the systems and strategies currently implemented in clinical nursing practice to enable timely, accurate, relevant and structured bedside clinical handover. Typically literature reviews comprise five stages, problem identification, literature search, data evaluation, data analysis and presentation. Thus, this essay will have the following components Introduction: Writing introductions and conclusions for essays Problem identification: In this section the student is to state the purpose, scope, aim / rationale of the review and the clinical question that they wish to investigate (PICO framework is to be utilised). The contribution of bedside clinical handover to the holistic care of patients and/or its impact on patient safety is to be explored in the adult population only. Literature search: Students are to submit as an appendix a summary table that succinctly outlines the key characteristics of the five articles provided for review (e.g. author/year, methodology, method, design, sample, setting, major findings, and strengths/limitations etc.). The table is to be presented in landscape format not portrait. Data Analysis: In this section of the essay the student is required to discuss the key findings (i.e. the overall results) from the research studies listed below. In addition, the student is required to explore the strengths and weakness of bedside clinical handover and the barriers and facilitators to its implementation in clinical practice. • In addition to the five (5) articles for review that have been provided, at a minimum, a further five (5) peer reviewed nursing journal articles related to the phenomenon of interest are to be cited in text.
