With reference to the play, A Doll House by Henrik Ibsen, I have made this assignment.
By the virtue of this assignment, I have focused on all the characters, how do the characters relate to each other and what m
akes them unique and significant. I have also touched upon the interaction of the characters in the play and significance of these characters to the play as a whole.
Nora - Nora is the protagonist of the play Doll House. She plays the wife of Torvald Helmer. Throughout the play, one can observe that her character has transformed manifolds. Initially, her character resembled to a naive child who is immature and lacks knowledge of the realities of the world. She is playful, frisky and lives in her own world. As the play progresses her character begins to have close encounters with the hard realities of the world, however her actions reflects rebellion such that Nora hints that she isn’t innocent of happy as she appears to be. She finds strength to face the realities in her marriage and call spade a spade understanding her position in the marriage. She introspects and finds clarity about her life with Torvald. Character reflects courage as she decides to free herself from the dominance of the husband and the oppressive environment created in the marriage.
Torvald Helmer - He plays the role of husband of the protagonist, Nora. This character is portrayed as a person who likes to be in control and enjoys power. He works in a bank and is delighted to get new position in his career since it brings a lot of authority. In his marriage, as well Torvald plays similar role, where he dominates the relationship. He behaves with Nora as a child, in a manner he always think he is superior to her. Undoubtedly, he is kind to her but at the same point he is also patronizing. His character is self-obsessed and over confident. In his marriage he doesn’t consider his wife as equal but perceives her as a playing object like a doll. Nora is a doll who can be teased and admired but not respected. His character revolves around giving priority to his status and place in society. He values opinion of others in the...
