Throughout the course of the play, the men scrounge for evidence concerning the murder that had taken place in the house of the Wrights. The play takes a significant turn when the two characters Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters discover the dead canary in ahidden box. The very name of the play is justified to the extent of their conversation which until their discovery has been viewed as something of little or no value. When the audience finally pounces upon the real motif of Mrs. Wright killing her husband, seems all the more absurd. The profusion of absurdity is soon dispelled by the evidence. The killing of the canary is a metaphor that delves deeper into the aspect of her motive for the killing. Susan Glaspell with her complete panache and tour de force leaves the readers perplexed which is followed by them being enlightened.
