TV Binge Assignment – Spring/Summer 2021 · · Double Spaced · 12-point font · 1-inch margins · Chapter 2-12 · chapters 9 and 10 are closely related · chapters 11 and 12 are closely related. · An introduction and a conclusion must also be prepared along with the chapter illustrations (pictures and/or short video clips, less than 2 minutes). · The introduction must contain a quick TV Show summary. It is not about the show, rather it is about the way in which the characters interpersonally communicate. · Each group member chooses one character, and the chapters they will explore. · Illustrate the chapter by things that happen in the show. · Remember the chapter is the star, not the character, this is not a TV review.  You must have a slide show using google slides with voice-over. Each Team must have not more than 15 slides. Slides are for enhancement, not a script. Please check your work, points will be forfeited if I cannot access the slide show. Slides must enhance your presentation. Each student needs to explain the video or slide. Please do not put all that you want to say on the slide, that defeats the purpose of a voice-over. If you wish, you can write a script and use that as your guide. Example 1. Introduction: (The intro and conclusion must be done by the same person) Friends is a 90's Comedy TV show, based in Manhattan, about 6 friends who go through just about every life experience imaginable together: love, marriage, divorce, children, heartbreaks, fights, new jobs and job losses and all sorts of drama. a. Quick summary: The show starts off with each character in their 20's, and expands over a 10-year period, as each character tries to find happiness, success and what the true meaning of a "friend" really is. The 6 main characters are Rachel Green, Phoebe Buffay, Monica Geller, Ross Geller, Joey Tribbiani and Chandler Bing. Introduce the first group member by their name. 2. First Character and Chapters: Phoebe Buffay is the character I have studied. In Chapter 3, Communication and the self, Floyd discusses the value of self-esteem and maintaining a positive image of ourselves. Those with higher self-esteem are generally more outgoing and more willing to communicate. After trying and failing at a difficult task, they try harder to accomplish it a second time. They are more comfortable initiating relationships, and they are more likely to believe that their partners’ expressions of love and support are genuine. a. Example from show An obvious example is in an episode of season six where Phoebe and Rachel go running. While Rachel is "uptight" and embarrassed by her friend's chaotic running style, Phoebe says, "Me, I’m freer. I run like I did when I was a kid because it’s more fun. "Didn’t you ever run so fast you thought your legs were going to fall off? Like when you were running towards the swings or running away from Satan?" she asked, before adding, "The neighbor’s dog," when Rachel looked confused. Phoebe does not care what others think of her. She has led a less then typical life and she has overcome many obstacles. These triumphs have made her who she is today, and she is not embarrassed by her past. Then you will explore another chapter with this character. This is a short example The team must speak for 30-45 minutes.  A google slide presentation along with voice over will be posted to blackboard. Only one post for each team.

Introduction
Communication is one of the most important aspects in a person’s daily life. This is done by the interpersonal communication, which i
s a process through which people exchange information, ideas and the feelings between two or more than two persons through the process of verbal and non-verbal communication. The communication is basically done through the face-to-face exchange of information in a much formal voice, necessary facial expressions, body languages and gestures. The effectiveness of interpersonal skill is measured by the manner in which the message is transferred from one person to another. The example of interpersonal communication can be explained by the TV series FRIENDS, which is about six friends who live in New York City, where they have gone through many ups and down of the friendship, finances, careers, and intimate relationships. This show is a non-realistic portrayal of those things, however, there are plenty of examples of interpersonal communication between them all such as romance, interpersonal conflicts, friendship, emotions, nonverbal communication, the use of language, stereotypical perceptions, self-esteem and image, and many more. In this paper a discussion is done with respect to the interpersonal communication projected in FRIENDS TV show, with the portrayal of the character Chandler Bing, as how he communicated with other members, and what kind of situation he had faced over the period of time in the show. The discussion is also done on different aspects of the interpersonal communication.
Summary of Chandler Bing
I have chosen one the major character among Friends TV series is Chandler Bing. Every character in friends had their ups and down and they have learned from their mistakes, however, the best development is the character of Chandler Bing. He is the one, who has managed to learn the most from his mistakes. Chandler Bing’s character has changed from the first episode to the last season, where there are many developments taken place in his life, however, he had sustained his personality traits, which makes him of the most lovable character in the series (Cristian, 2021). A person’s personality trait is one of the most important aspect because it reflects the characteristics of a person through the pattern of thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Personality traits also consist of stability, with someone having extraversion is expected to be more sociable in different situations over the period of time.
Chandler began as the friend who mainly used the sarcasm and humour as a defence mechanism because he had spent a very rough childhood, when his parents divorced at the age of nine, and also, he faced trouble processing that his father was now a drag artist in Las Vegas. Chandler’s character associated all the events in family tv series linked with his parent’s divorce in a negative manner, especially during the Thanksgiving, as his parents had revealed the separation on a Thanksgiving dinner. This also led to the translation of the commitment issues and also the unavailability of emotions, which were considered as the major part of his arc in this entire series, because mostly it can be seen the manner in which he was on and off relationship with Janice (Zahiri & Choi, 2018).
Analysis of Chandler Bing’s Character based on Forming and Maintaining Personal Relationships
In the chapter nine the description is mainly on the importance of maintaining the personal relationship among the people. As discussed by Corkey (2021) that we humans are social animals deep down to our cells as nature has not made us noble loners. Further discussed in the need to belong theory that proposes that each of us are born to seek, form, maintain and protect the strong relationship. In order to fulfill that drive we use the interpersonal communication as a medium to form social bonds with other, be it in our school, in our neighbours, in community, in the religious organizations, and many other social contexts. The need to belong theory also suggests that for all of us as a human to satisfy the drive for the relationship, we need the social bonds that are both emotional and interactive (Aw & Labrecque, 2020). For example, most of us would not be satisfied if we do have close relationships with the people, we never got to communicate. If we are disconnected from the social interaction then that can be physically and emotionally devastating. In the tv series friends, Chandler’s biggest challenge started along with his relationship with Monica. Chandler interaction with Monica and further getting involved into the relationship is a sign of a sense of need for the belongingness with each other. Zumaeta (2019) has further discussed that relationship normally fulfill our needs for both interactive and emotional closeness, such as the close and romantic relationship with the partner, as Chandler had with Monica, or with the long-time friends, such as with other characters in the family tv series. Each of those relationships can help a person to feel connected and also when we are unable to connect with them or cannot interact with them. The need of a person for belonginess is the major reason which reasons those relationships matter most to the people and this also helps a person to grow.
In the tv series of friends, Chandler’s fear aroused because of the troubled childhood he had faced, which had an impact over his mind. Baumeister and Leary (2017) have further added that those who have suffered a traumatic childhood experience often face difficulties in identifying, expressing and managing their emotions, and they also have a very limited language to often express their feeling or state of mind. This further leads to the significant depression, anxiety or anger. In the tv series of family, the trauma that Chandler had carried from his past regarding the divorce incident that occurred between his parents at the age of nine and that too on the Thanksgiving Day. Therefore, a trauma had occupied his mind regarding the relationship commitment, because he had a fear that things might not fall in place with Monica. However, as discussed by Kaos et al. (2019) that that relationship brings in many rewards, such as emotional rewards, which provides emotional support or encouragement during the emotional crisis. Whether a person is going through a serious crisis or they are having a bad day, the close relationship can provide comfort and empathy. This had led Chandler to increase interaction with his friends and later in the stage of tv series he connected with Monica. The second emotional reward that can be received is having a close relationship which brings happiness. A person always enjoys interacting with people who they care about because it is a relaxing state that brings in entertainment and fun.
One of the major aspects of personal relationship is the commitment. As discussed by Solomontos-Kountouri and Strohmeier (2021) that in a close relationship commitment is the desire to stay in a relationship no matter what happens, that includes...
