Introduction
Sexual attraction is a common psychological p
henomenon in human beings particularly in the context of males. In fact, males usually get tempted by the unique attractive features of females and begin to observe the precise details of their beauty. It is one of the most common perceptions where women are generally trolled by the eyes of men at a public place. However, it is also significant to note here that not always this trolling is meant to be negative or harmful. Instead, it is a purely self driven desire to see the beauteous aspect of physique of a young female. In A&P by John Updike, something similar happens when the checkout clerk Sammy observes the beauty of the three young girls wearing bath suits. With the entrance of the girls in store till the end of the story where Sammy quits his job due to the biased behavior of the store manager, the short story depicts the male mentality of considering women as catalysts of sexually driven joy as well as the rebellion spirit of Sammy which goes unrewarded by the girls in the end.
Background of the Events
    At first, it is significant to observe some of the main events in the story that actually structure the overall plot. Three girls enter the store named as A&P wearing bath suits where Sammy works as the checkout clerk. The unusual dressing of the three attracts the attention of everyone present in the store including staff and the customers as well. Particularly, their personalities are scrutinized by Sammy who seems to have developed specific interest in the leader of the three—he names her Queenie.
