Ten data sets must be assigned for storage to one of three disk drives. Each disk drive can store 885 MB. The sizes of the data sets (in MB) are listed in the file P08_35.xlsx. When many people access a disk drive, there is a significant reduction in the speed at which the data are retrieved. To reduce the number of people accessing a disk drive, we strive to make the data sets on each disk drive as different as possible. To achieve this goal, we have assigned penalties for assigning similar data sets to the same disk drive. These penalties are also listed in the P08_35.xlsx file. For example, if data sets 9 and 10 are assigned to the same drive, a penalty of 221 is incurred, whereas if disks 8 and 10 are assigned to the same drive, a penalty of only 35 is incurred. You can think of the penalty as the number of times two data sets are accessed at the same time. Assign the data sets to disk drives to minimize total penalties.
